Serological frequency of Leptospira spp. in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) in Paraná state, Brazil

ABSTRACT: Leptospirosis is a zoonosis that can infect buffaloes and other mammalians, it’s caused by Gram-negative bacteria of the genus Leptospira spp. The infection occurs through contact with urine or contaminated environment mucous membranes animals, disease has two phases: leptospiremia leptospiruria. objective this study was to determine frequency leptospirosis in state Paraná, Brazil, as well main serovars present area. A total 276 blood samples were collected from 18 properties located different cities mesoregions Paraná state. microscopic agglutination test (MAT) performed detect presence anti-Leptospira antibodies identify its serovars. prevalence 77.17% (213/276) seropositive for at least one serovar. most frequent serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae, followed Pomona Hardjo. This seems be first Paraná. Prevention control measures are important herds.
